Germany’s Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) has placed a major order with Rheinmetall for logistic vehicles.

Germany’s Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) has placed a major order with Rheinmetall for logistic vehicles.

Under the €2bn ($2.2bn) seven-year framework contract, Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV) will deliver 4,000 vehicles.

Specifically, the company will supply protected swap body systems featuring armoured driver’s cabs. The system will boost the Logistics Corps’ survivability and sustainment capability.

Initially, 540 vehicles worth €348m ($390m) will be delivered, which includes 230 protected vehicles.

Delivery is expected to begin next year with an aim to provide the Bundeswehr with sufficient vehicles before Germany leads Nato’s The Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF) in 2023.

The systems will be deployed in operating areas to supply ammunition to frontline combat units.

RMMV’s HX 8×8 vehicles will be operable on all terrains with an optionally fitted protected cab.

The vehicle will feature a hook loader developed by Hiab company. This will allow to rapidly lift and set down the accompanying flat racks.

They can also accommodate an interchangeable platform or a container via the standardised 20ft ISO interfaces.

The off-road mobile vehicle will have improved component uniformity than the Unprotected Transport Vehicle (UTF) family.

Reducing training time and maintenance personnel, the vehicle will share common spare parts and special tools. This will allow better utilisation with greater economic efficiency.

In July 2017, the company was awarded a seven-year UTF framework by BAAINBw for delivery of 2271 vehicles.

The delivery comprises components, including engines, axles, transmissions and build-on. Vehicles are assembled in RMMV plant in Vienna.

Currently, the vehicle is in service with nations including the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Denmark. Norway and Sweden have also placed substantial truck orders with Rheinmetall.
