A house fire in Sydney’s southwest resulted in the serious burns of a young woman and her infant.

A fire that started in a granny flat at a residence in Chester Hill seriously burnt an eight-month-old child and a lady in her 20s.

The kitchen of the Miles Street building is where the fire began soon before 1.45 p.m.

According to a spokeswoman for Fire and Rescue NSW, the fire started in a granny apartment at the back of the house.

Fire and Rescue NSW investigators are on the scene looking into the cause of the flame after the fire has already been put out.

The woman and the infant were both treated by paramedics on the spot before being taken to the hospital.

The infant was transported in a critical but stable condition to Westmead Children’s Hospital.

The mother of the kid was taken by ambulance to Concord Hospital’s burn unit with serious but stable burns to her face, back, arms, and legs.

NSW Ambulance inspector Caine Sanders said they were met with a ‘particularly delicate situation’ when they arrived due to the age of the baby.

‘Any incident involving fire carries a large amount of risk and it was crucial we began treatment as soon as possible,’ he said.

‘This was a particularly delicate situation because there was a young child involved.

‘This has no doubt been a traumatic incident and we send our best wishes to the family for their recovery.’
